Your refrigerator has to work even harder when it's hot outside, and an overworked refrigerator wastes energy (and your money) which shortens its life span. Here are five easy ways to keep your refrigerator cool during the hot summer months coming up.
1. Don't Crowd the Refrigerator- Leave space around the edges of the refrigerator so the hot air it releases can move up and away.
2. Place Your Refrigerator Away from Hot Spots- If you have options about where to put your refrigerator, avoid installing your refrigerator in direct sunlight, in a warm garage, or next to a range, cooktop or wall oven. This will force the compressor to work 24 hours a day which means it won't last as long and the temperatures in the refrigerator will be warmer.
3. Use the Right Electrical Outlet- Make certain that your refrigerator is the only thing plugged into an outlet, especially in the garage or storage area. A refrigerator struggles to do its job without sufficient electricity, which decreases its performance and damages electrical components.
4. Dust the Refrigerator- If your model has exposed condenser coils on the back, pull it away from the wall this time of year and vacuum dust from the coils and the surrounding area. The condenser pulls air from under the refrigerator and it will have a hard time if that grill is clogged with dust.
5. Close the Refrigerator Door- Figure out what you want to get from the refrigerator before opening it. That's the easiest way to save energy.
